“Che cos’è il segno, questo elemento primordiale, elementare, fondante dell’intero sistema del reale, così come siamo abituati a conoscerlo e a praticarlo fin dagli albori di tutta la storia della civiltà – che è, anzitutto, storia di segni e di simboli, oltre che dei sentimenti e delle pulsioni degli uomini, che di quei segni e di quei simboli si sono serviti per costituire tra loro situazioni e relazioni, vuoi d’amicizia, d’amore, di potere, di alleanza, anche di guerra, d’odio e d’inimicizia, e infine di ragionamento e di traduzione artistica e poetica sul mondo stesso? Che cos’è, dunque, questo grafismo elementare, apparentemente semplice e allo stesso tempo complessissimo da interpretare, non sempre traducibile con i parametri del “verosimile” o del “realistico”, non sempre incasellabile in categorie prestabilite, che è appunto il segno, il segno puro, libero, spontaneo – strana, meravigliosa astrazione che rimanda, seppure in via metaforica, al nocciolo fondante della nostra esistenza terrena, al nostro segreto rapportarci con gli altri e col mondo, oltre che a quello che di noi stessi non sappiamo se non per vie traverse, intuitive, irrazionali, profonde, non avendo scandagliato, se non parzialmente (nonostante cento e passa anni di psicanalisi), quella strana entità che è chiamato inconscio, nostro e del mondo in cui viviamo?”
 
“What is the sign, this primordial, basic element, foundation of the entire reality system as we are used to knowing it and to using it since the beginning of history of civilisation, which is, first of all, a history of signs and symbols, but also of feelings and drives of human beings, who utilised those signs and symbols to establish situations and relationships among themselves, friendhip, love, power, alliance, but also war, hatred and hostility, and finally to reason on, and artistically and poetically translate, the world itself? So, what is this elementary graphism, apparently simple and at the same time very complex to interpret, not always translatable with “verisimilitude” or “realism” parameters, not always classifiable using given categories, which is indeed the sign, pure, simple and spontaneous – strange, marvellous abstraction that refers, albeit in a metaphorical way, to the founding core of our worldly existence and to our secret way of relating to others and to the world, together with what we don’t know about ourselves other than through indirect, intuitive, irrational, profound ways, having only partially analysed (despite more than a hundred years of psychoanalysis) that strange entity called the unconscious, meaning both our unconscious and that of the world where we live?”
